CONCEPT & INSTALLATION DESIGN FOR LAWRENCE ABU HAMDAN’S VIDEO WORK WALLED UNWALLED AT THE 58TH Venice Biennale, and for the Turner Prize EXHIBITION.
This edition of Walled Unwalled inhabits the ground floor of the Giardini Pavillione Centrale, as part of the Italian Pavilion, curated by Ralph Rugoff with the theme “May You Live in Interesting Times”.
In the same language of the steel columns and I-beams that support the space, a steel frame peels away to support itself and panes of glass, suspending a rear-projection film in the void between the columns. The overall construction forms an animated, see-through, partition in place of where walls could have been, bringing into question the physical, unchanging, and impenetrable nature of barriers.
The screen’s dual-sided visibility challenges the delineation between front and back, inside and out, public and private, to spatially conjure the themes addressed in the film.
